Mail Order - Monday
Ugh! Some problems with UPS so the shipment won’t arrive until Monday. Very frustrating. But I’m planning on taking mail-orders for the records then. Hopefully they actually arrive…
In the meantime, here’s a little write up about Constellations I did for HDIFTBL.
After The Penguin League was released, I didn’t write any songs for an entire year. I thought about it from time to time but as the saying goes, “the easiest thing to do on earth is to not write.” It’s not that I didn’t want to write songs, it’s just that I developed a habit of conveniently distracting myself from sitting down and actually figuring out a piece of music. I was pretty good at putting things off.
But over the years I would think of a nice melody and store it away in my brain or a lyric that might work well somewhere and I’d write it down. Little bits and pieces of songs waiting to be arranged into a larger context. Eventually, I had a whole notebook full of ideas and in the fall of 2008, I began recording Constellations.
I knew that I wanted the record to be direct and catchy, but also dynamic and engaging because as Jonathan Richman says, “if the music’s gonna move me, it’s gotta be action-packed.”
Constellations is a much more pop-focused sound than the Penguin League. There’re different ideas both lyrically and thematically with longer and more intricate arrangements. There’s more life, more complications, and more heartbreak.
I think you’ll like it.
